Gavin had an excellent 2018 season and won the following:
- East Route Champion – Club, Combine and Border Homing Union (BHU)
- Yearlings club champion – 1st
- Yearlings points Combine & Union – 2nd
- Overall points ECBU (Border Homing Union & Eastern Cape Pigeon Union) – 3rd
Gavin’s foundation pigeon is LINCOIN (ZA 13/16985). This magnificent hen was bred by Bertus out of CORN FLAKES (grandson WITTENBUIK 370) and TWILIGHT (granddaughter WITTENBUIK 370). WITTENBUIK 370 is a son of Bertus’s foundation pair WITPEN WITTENBUIK and THE GABY HEN.
LINCOIN was one of the youngsters Bertus entered in the DIAZ ONE LOFT (2014 season). She performed very well and her best positions were:
- 1st 305km 1384mpm
- 8th 545km 1162mpm
- 13th 440km 1262mpm (came with winning birds)
- 19th 303km 1110mpm (came with winning birds)
- 20th 205km 1071mpm (came with winning birds)
Bertus bought LINCOIN back on the auction of the birds after the last race. He could not attend the auction and asked Gavin, who was there, to take her to East London with him. In the meantime he would arrange transport for Lincoin from East London to Colesberg. Gavin was very impressed with the quality of LINCOIN and after she spent a few days in his lofts he decided to make Bertus an offer to buy her. Bertus accepted his offer and so East London became LINCOIN’S new home.
Gavin also had a few youngsters of Bertus in the racing loft and among them were a sister and brother of LINCOIN. Gavin bred two youngsters, BORDER 14/3815 and 3816, out of LINCOIN with a Norbert de Schruyver cock. Both were hens and they competed in a few races in 2015.
3815 won 4th, 5th and 13th and 3816 took 3rd (8th Combine) and 6th (8th Combine). They scored in every race they were basketed and Gavin decided to take them to the stock loft, a decision he never regretted. Little did he know that the LINCOIN pigeons would form the foundation of his loft a few years later.
